Request records that a public body holds about your case or the system.

What it can do

  • Compel a public body to disclose records, subject to exemptions
  • Surface data that is not otherwise published

What it cannot do

  • Deliver records quickly — there are set timelines and possible fees

When to consider it

  • You want records a public body holds about your child or the program
  • You are building an evidence base or a systemic picture

Typical timeframe

Public bodies have statutory response timelines; complex requests take longer.

Risks and limits

  • Exemptions and fees apply; appeals go to the Information and Privacy Commissioner.
