Ontario does not publish OAP wait times broken out by region. The provincial figures below are the only verified numbers we have — there is no separate Sudbury, Thunder Bay, or Sault Ste. Marie wait-list count to cite. Distance and provider scarcity in the North are well documented qualitatively, but we will not invent regional statistics that don't exist.

Neither option closes the gap. They are workarounds, not solutions — and both require a family to already know they exist.
If you must travel at least 100km one-way for a specialist (like a diagnosis assessment), you may be eligible for reimbursement.
Many "southern" providers offer virtual OAP services (Parent Coaching, SLP, OT) to northern families.
Coverage in the North is not even. Most coordinated OAP capacity sits in three towns — everywhere else depends on travel or virtual care.

As of March 4, 2026, 89,799 children are registered with the Ontario Autism Program. However, only 20,633 (23%) have an active Core Funding Agreement. This represents approximately 290% growth in registrations since 2019, with 69,166 children still waiting for essential funding.

Northern Ontario faces a severe autism service crisis with only ~12 BCBAs serving 800,000km². Families travel 500km+ for therapy, facing winter closures and annual travel costs exceeding $30,000. Indigenous communities face significant barriers to accessing OAP services in remote areas.

The Northern Health Travel Grant (NHTG) helps cover medical travel costs for Northern Ontario residents, but it typically only reimburses a fraction of actual expenses (gas/hotels) for autism therapy. Families often spend $30,000+ annually out-of-pocket for travel to access services not available in their home communities.

British Columbia provides $22,000/year until age 6, then $6,000/year until 18, delivered directly to families. Unlike Ontario, BC families avoid multi-year waitlists because funding flows automatically after diagnosis.

The clock is always ticking, and the vast majority of autistic children in Ontario are waiting during the sensitive developmental period when intervention is most effective.
