Can autistic students get an educational assistant (EA)?

Schools may assign EAs based on IEP needs, but **47% of families** report insufficient supports. [OAC] EA availability varies by board and often fails to match clinical needs, leaving many autistic students without necessary classroom support.

Why I Fight

"My son was diagnosed with severe, non-verbal autism at 14 months old. Like thousands of other parents, I was told early intervention was critical. And like thousands of others, I was placed on a waitlist that effectively has no end."

When I realized that the "waitlist" was actually a systemic failure—a denial of service disguised as a queue—I couldn't stay silent. I founded End The Wait Ontario to unify the voices of 87,692 families and demand the support our children represent under the law.

The Human Rights Case

In 2025, I filed a Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO) application (Carroll v. Ontario, File 2025-62264-I) arguing that making disabled children wait years for medically necessary developmental services constitutes discrimination under Ontario's Human Rights Code. This is not just about my son — it is about establishing a legal precedent that protects every disabled child in this province.

Every statistic cited in this case is FOI-sourced from Ontario government records. Verify any of them.

Credentials & Approach

Spencer approaches autism advocacy as a data transparency project, applying the same verification standards used in investigative journalism. Every claim on this site is traced to a government document, FOI response, or peer-reviewed publication.

  • •Data journalist and parent advocate — combining policy research with lived experience of Ontario's autism waitlist
  • •Triple-verification methodology: every statistic cross-referenced against primary government sources before publication
  • •Clip included in WHO (@who) Instagram reel discussing autism early intervention and the importance of following the data. Not endorsed by WHO.
  • •Non-partisan approach — encouraging families to engage elected representatives of all parties based on evidence, not political affiliation
