During registration, be prepared to provide:

  • Child full legal name and date of birth
  • Your contact information (phone, email, address)
  • Upload diagnosis document (PDF or photo)
  • Answer questions about child current needs and services

6

Complete Needs Assessment (When Contacted)

  • Areas needing support
  • Safety and behavioural needs
  • Family goals for therapy
  • Current services and gaps
  • Funding budget amount
7

Select Service Providers & Begin Services

Once approved for core clinical services or interim funding, choose OAP-approved service providers and create your service plan.

Important considerations:

  • Some providers have additional waitlists — call ahead to confirm availability

These are the current wait times for OAP core clinical services. This is why registering immediately after diagnosis is so important — your position on the waitlist is based on your registration date.

Frequently Asked Questions About OAP Registration

How long does OAP registration take?

After submitting your registration to Access OAP, eligibility confirmation typically takes 4-6 weeks. You will receive written confirmation of your child registration and their position on the waitlist. The entire process from diagnosis to active funding can take 5+ years due to wait times.

Can I register for OAP without a diagnosis?

No. A confirmed, written diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder from a qualified professional is required to register for OAP. Pending diagnoses, suspicions, or being on an assessment waitlist do not qualify. You must have the formal diagnosis document before contacting Access OAP.

What is the Access OAP phone number?

You can contact Access OAP at 1-833-425-2445 (toll-free) or 1-833-427-6869 (TTY). Their hours are typically Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM Eastern Time. You can also email accessoap@ontario.ca or visit oapportal.ca for online registration.

Is there a deadline to register for OAP after diagnosis?

There is no strict deadline, but you should register immediately after receiving the diagnosis. Your position on the OAP waitlist is determined by your registration date, not the diagnosis date. Every day of delay potentially means months longer waiting for core clinical services.

Can I register my child for OAP if they are under 2?

Yes. Children can be registered at any age after receiving a diagnosis, including infants and toddlers. Early registration is strongly encouraged because wait times for OAP funding are 5+ years. Registering early maximizes the time your child may receive services before aging out at 18.

What if my diagnosis document is not in English?

Diagnosis documents not in English or French must include a certified translation. The translation should be attached to the original diagnosis document when submitting to Access OAP. Contact Access OAP if you need guidance on translation requirements.

Do I need to renew my OAP registration each year?

No. Once registered, your child remains on the OAP waitlist until they turn 18 or begin receiving services. However, you should keep your contact information updated with Access OAP to ensure you receive important notifications about your child status.

Can foster parents or legal guardians register a child for OAP?

Yes. Foster parents, legal guardians, or Children Aid Society representatives can register a child for OAP if the child has an autism diagnosis and is under 18. You will need to provide documentation of your legal guardianship or placement status along with the diagnosis document.

    Troubleshooting Common Registration Issues

I submitted my registration weeks ago and haven't heard back. What should I do?

Contact Access OAP at 1-833-425-2445 to follow up on your application status. Have your reference number ready if you received one. Wait times for eligibility confirmation can be 4-6 weeks, but if it been longer, follow up is recommended. Document all calls with dates and names of representatives you speak with.

Access OAP said my diagnosis document is incomplete. What now?

Contact the diagnosing professional to request an updated letter with all required information. OAP requires: child full name, date of birth, assessment date, clear ASD diagnosis statement (DSM-5 criteria), and the professional name and credentials. Incomplete documents will delay registration and affect your waitlist position.

I lost my OAP registration confirmation. How do I get another copy?

Contact Access OAP at 1-833-425-2445 or accessOAP@ontario.ca to request a replacement confirmation letter. You will need to verify your identity and provide your child information. If you registered online through the OAP Portal, you may also be able to download documents from your account.

My child's diagnosis is from outside Ontario. Is it still valid for OAP?

Yes. Diagnoses from other jurisdictions (including other countries) are accepted if they meet DSM-5 criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder and are from a qualified professional. The diagnosis document should be in English or French, or include a certified translation. OAP does not require the diagnosis to be from an Ontario-based professional.

What if I move to a different Ontario address after registering?

Update your contact information with Access OAP as soon as possible. Contact them at 1-833-425-2445 or update your information online through the OAP Portal. Keeping your information current ensures you receive important notifications and that your child remains eligible for services in your new region.

My child is turning 18 soon. Can I still register for OAP?

Children remain eligible for OAP until their 18th birthday. If your child is approaching 18, you should register immediately if you have not already. Once a child turns 18, they are no longer eligible for OAP Childhood Budget or Core Clinical Services. Adults must access supports through ODSP, Passport Funding, or adult developmental services.

What Your Diagnosis Document Must Include

Access OAP requires specific information on your diagnosis document. Incomplete documents will cause delays or rejection of your registration.

Critical: If your diagnosis document is missing any required information, contact the diagnosing professional immediately to request an updated letter. Do not wait — every day of delay affects your waitlist position.
