OAP Registration Process

Step 1: Get an Autism Diagnosis

Obtain a formal ASD diagnosis from a qualified professional. Public assessments take 12-24 months. Private assessments take 2-4 months and cost $2,500-$4,500.

Step 2: Register Immediately with Access OAP

Call 1-833-425-2445 or visit oapportal.ca. Your waitlist position is based on registration date, not diagnosis date. Every day of delay means waiting longer.

Step 3: Wait for Needs Assessment Invitation

Wait to be contacted for the next step in the process. Timing varies and this page does not assign a single published province-wide timeline.

Step 4: Complete Needs Assessment

Participate in clinical assessment to determine your child's funding level. This takes several hours over multiple sessions with a clinician.

Step 5: Select Service Provider

Choose an OAP-approved provider from the ministry list. Many providers have additional waitlists, adding more time.

Step 6: Begin Services

Once funding is approved and a provider is selected, services can begin. Provider availability can still vary by location and provider.

Important: These are estimates based on aggregated data. Individual experiences may vary. The World Health Organization recommends autism intervention begin as soon as possible after diagnosis, the WHO emphasizes timely access to early evidence-based psychosocial interventions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Ontario autism waiting list work?
The OAP waitlist is primarily based on registration date. Ministry materials say children are invited to the next steps in the order they register, subject to program rules. In the Ontario Autism Coalition's published December 10, 2025 FOI update, 88,175 children were reported as registered in OAP, 20,666 were enrolled in Core Clinical Services, and 20,666 had active funding agreements (23.4%). This does not include children who are still waiting for an autism diagnosis and cannot yet register.
How long is the wait for OAP funding in Ontario?
Families often describe multi-year waits for core clinical funding, but this page does not assign a single province-wide average or urgency-specific timeline because the available public source chain does not support a precise current breakdown. The safest public figures are the registration and funding counts in the Ontario Autism Coalition's December 10, 2025 FOI update.
How do I register for the OAP waitlist?
To register for OAP, call Access OAP at 1-833-425-2445 or visit the OAP Portal online at oapportal.ca. You will need your child's autism diagnosis document, proof of age (birth certificate), and proof of Ontario residency. Register immediately after diagnosis, your waitlist position is based on registration date, not diagnosis date.
What is my child's position on the OAP waitlist?
The Ontario government does not publicly release a numbered waitlist position. You can contact Access OAP at 1-833-425-2445 to confirm your child's registration status and what stage of the process you are in, but specific rankings are not publicly posted.
Can I check my OAP waitlist status online?
Yes, registered families can check their status through the OAP Portal at oapportal.ca. The portal provides information about registration status, whether needs assessment is complete, and funding approval status. However, it does not show your specific numerical position on the waitlist.
How does the needs assessment affect wait times?
The needs assessment determines your child's funding level but does not significantly change wait times. After registration, families wait to be invited for needs assessment. Once complete, you wait again for funding approval and provider selection. Each step adds time to the overall wait.
Does my child's age affect their position on the waitlist?
Age is not a primary factor in waitlist positioning. The waitlist is primarily based on registration date. However, children who age out (turn 18) before receiving services lose their eligibility entirely, creating urgency for families of older children.
What happens if I move while on the OAP waitlist?
If you move within Ontario, your waitlist position and registration are maintained, you simply need to update your contact information and address with Access OAP. If you move out of Ontario, your child will no longer be eligible for OAP funding, as residency in Ontario is a requirement.
How are urgent cases prioritized on the OAP waitlist?
Public ministry materials do not provide a detailed published ranking formula on this page. Families should rely on AccessOAP for case-specific information rather than a generalized urgency timeline.
What happens after my child is approved for OAP funding?
After approval, you select an OAP-approved service provider from the ministry list. Many providers have their own waitlists, adding more time. Once you select a provider and create a service plan, OAP releases funding and your child can begin receiving services.
