Does Insurance Cover ABA Therapy in Ontario?

Most parents are shocked how little they receive when they finally check their insurance. A typical employer benefits plan in Ontario covers 1,000 to 5,000 dollars a year under psychology or paramedical services. When your child needs 20+ weekly hours of ABA therapy, that coverage runs out in a matter of weeks. It feels like a slap in the face.

The biggest barrier is that no Ontario health-profession college currently oversees BCBAs. That means insurers have no obligation to cover their services directly. If your ABA provider is supervised by a registered psychologist, you may be able to bill under psychology benefits - but you need to ask your plan administrator specifically about this.

Start by calling your benefits provider and asking explicitly: "Does my plan cover Applied Behaviour Analysis delivered by a registered psychologist or under psychological supervision?" Get the answer in writing. Some plans have added autism-specific riders in recent years, especially in the public sector and large employers.

If both parents have employer coverage, coordinate benefits to double your available reimbursement. Keep every receipt and submit regularly - do not let claims pile up past the filing deadline. Some families also access Health Spending Accounts (HSAs) to cover the gap between insurance and actual therapy costs.
