Steps to Switch OAP Providers

If you are unsatisfied with your current OAP Core Clinical provider — whether due to clinical approach, communication, staffing changes, or geographic reasons — you have the right to switch providers at any time. The process involves: (1) Notify your current provider in writing that you are terminating the service agreement. The OAP requires approximately 30 days notice to allow for clinical closure and transition documentation. (2) Identify a new provider from the OAP Provider List (oapproviderlist.ca). Filter by region and service type to find providers accepting new clients.

(3) Contact your regional MCCSS office at 1-833-425-2445 to inform them of the switch and request assistance with transferring your childhood budget and file to the new provider. (4) Work with both providers during the transition to transfer your child's behaviour plan, assessment data, and progress notes to minimize disruption to programming.

What Happens to Your OAP Budget When You Switch

Your OAP childhood budget follows your child — it is not locked to a specific provider. When you switch providers, the remaining budget for the fiscal year transfers to your new provider. Any amounts already invoiced by the previous provider for services rendered are not recoverable, but unused budget carries forward to the new provider within the same fiscal year.

If the provider transition spans a fiscal year boundary (April 1), be aware that unused funds from the prior year are forfeited regardless of the transition. Plan your switch timing to minimize budget waste, and confirm the budget transfer process directly with your MCCSS regional office.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. You are not locked into any OAP provider. Give your current provider written notice (approximately 30 days) and select a new provider from the OAP Provider List at oapproviderlist.ca. Contact your MCCSS regional office to facilitate the budget transfer.

Provider transitions can cause short-term disruption to therapy programs. Request that your current provider share all clinical documentation, behaviour plans, and progress notes with the new provider. A brief overlap period for joint meetings may reduce transition gaps.

Search the OAP Provider List at oapproviderlist.ca, filtering by region and service type. Contact providers directly to confirm they are accepting new clients. Wait times for new clients can be several months even with approved providers.
