Has the government "cleared" the autism backlog?

Government claims of "clearing the backlog" refer only to sending initial administrative invitations, not delivering therapy. While 87,692 children are registered, only 23% receive core clinical services. [FOI] Thousands of "cleared" families merely receive a one-time $5,500 check which covers less than 6 weeks of therapy.

How many children are on the Ontario autism waitlist in 2026?

Latest FOI data shows 87,692 children registered with the Ontario Autism Program (Dec 2025), up from 70,176 reported by the Financial Accountability Office in March 2024. Only ~19,600 children receive core clinical services (23%), leaving 68,000+ waiting for evidence-based care during critical developmental years.

Do autism waitlists violate the Canadian Charter of Rights?

The Supreme Court (Auton, 2004) ruled there is no automatic right to specific funding. However, the Ontario Human Rights Code prohibits discrimination in service delivery based on disability. Multi-year delays for approved OAP services may constitute systemic discrimination. The OHRC has issued policy statements on the rights of people with disabilities to equitable service access.
