How long does autism diagnosis take in Ontario?

Before joining the OAP waitlist, Ontario diagnostic waitlists average **12–24 months** at public hospitals. [OAP] This pre-waitlist delay means total time from first concern to therapy often exceeds **5–7 years**, an invisible bottleneck in official statistics.

Adult Diagnosis — Quick Summary

  • Most autism services end at age 18, leaving adults to navigate a separate and confusing support system.
  • Private assessments cost $2,500-$4,000 and take 4-8 weeks. Public options are free but have 2+ year waits.
  • A formal diagnosis unlocks ODSP disability benefits and the Disability Tax Credit.
  • Fewer than 15% of autistic adults in Ontario have full-time jobs — support gaps are real.
  • University clinics offer lower-cost assessments ($1,500-$2,500) but wait times are longer.

Adult Autism Diagnosis in Ontario

Getting diagnosed as an adult in Ontario is not straightforward. OHIP-covered assessments are almost nonexistent for adults, so most people go private.

ASSESSMENT PROCESS

What to Expect

  1. 1

    Initial Consultation

You talk through your concerns, childhood history, and day-to-day challenges. Usually 1-2 hours.

  2. 2

    Full Assessment

The psychologist uses standard assessment tools (like the ADOS-2) and reviews your history. Takes 2-4 hours total.

  3. 3

    Feedback Session

Go over results, discuss the diagnosis (if one is given), and ask questions. About 1 hour.

  4. 4

    Written Report

You receive a detailed report, usually 2-4 weeks after your assessment. This is the document you need for ODSP and other supports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. But OHIP-covered options for adults are very hard to find. Most adults go through a private psychologist, which costs $2,500-$4,000 and takes about 4-8 weeks from booking to report.
A private assessment by a registered psychologist runs $2,500-$4,000. OHIP-covered assessments exist but waits are 2+ years. University psychology clinics charge less ($1,500-$2,500), though their wait times are also longer.
In Ontario, a registered psychologist or a physician with the right training can diagnose autism in adults. Most adults see a psychologist in private practice. Psychiatrists can diagnose too, but their waits tend to be longer. Look for someone with specific experience in adult autism.
