Teenagers with autism face unique challenges around social relationships, identity, and preparing for adulthood. Mental health support becomes increasingly important, and transition planning should begin by age 14.
Transition planning should begin by age 14. Work with your school to include transition goals in the IEP. Connect with Developmental Services Ontario (DSO) by age 16 to understand adult services.
OAP services end at age 18. Before aging out, connect with DSO for adult developmental services, explore ODSP (Ontario Disability Support Program), and ensure transition plans are in place.
Contact your regional DSO office by age 16-17. You'll need documentation including the autism diagnosis. DSO determines eligibility for adult developmental services including housing, employment, and community support.
