Has the government cleared the autism backlog?

No. Government claims of "clearing the backlog" refer only to administrative invitations, not actual service delivery. While **88,175 children** are registered, over 67,000 still lack funding for clinical therapy. [FOI] Dec 2025 data confirms that only 23.4% of children have accessed core services.

How Long Is the OAP Waitlist in 2026?

Quick Answer: As of January 2026 FOI data, the Ontario Autism Program (OAP) waitlist exceeds 88,175 children. Wait times for core clinical services range from 5+ years depending on your region.

Current OAP Waitlist Numbers (December 2025)

MetricCurrent Status
Total Children Waiting88,175
Average Wait Time5+ years
Shortest Regional Wait~3 years
Longest Regional Wait6+ years
Children Added Monthly~800-1,000

Wait Times by Region

Wait times vary significantly across Ontario:

Greater Toronto Area (GTA)

  • Toronto: 4-5 years
  • Peel Region: 5-6 years
  • York Region: 4-5 years
  • Durham Region: 4-5 years

Southern Ontario

  • Hamilton: 4-5 years
  • Niagara: 5+ years
  • London: 4-5 years
  • Windsor: 5+ years

Northern Ontario

  • Sudbury: 3-4 years
  • Thunder Bay: 3-4 years
  • Timmins: 3-4 years

Eastern Ontario

  • Ottawa: 4-5 years
  • Kingston: 4-5 years

Why Is the Wait So Long?

1. Demand Outpaces Supply

  • 88,175 children on the waitlist
  • Only 200-300 approved OAP providers
  • Estimated 5,000-7,000 new registrations per year

2. Funding Hasn't Kept Pace

The Ontario government claims autism funding has "doubled," but:

  • Waitlist grew approximately 285% since 2019
  • Funding increased only 54%
  • Per-child funding has actually decreased

3. Provider Shortage

  • Complex accreditation requirements
  • Low reimbursement rates deter providers
  • Geographic gaps in service availability

What Is Happening While You Wait?

During the wait, children:

  • Miss critical early intervention windows (ages 0-6)
  • Fall behind peers in development
  • Experience increased behavioural challenges
  • Require more intensive support later

Research shows every year of delayed intervention can cost families and systems significantly more in long-term support needs.

What Can You Do Right Now?

1. Apply for Interim One-Time Funding

Even while waiting for core services, you may be eligible for:

  • $5,000 - $40,000 in one-time funding
  • Based on family income and child's needs
  • Can be used for private therapy, equipment, respite

2. Consider Private Assessment

Skip the 2-3 year public assessment wait:

  • Cost: $2,500 - $8,000
  • Timeline: 3-6 months
  • Benefit: Register for OAP years earlier

3. Explore Private Therapy

While expensive, private therapy during the wait:

  • ABA therapy: $30-100/hour
  • Speech therapy: $100-200/session
  • Occupational therapy: $100-175/session

4. School-Based Supports

Your child may qualify for:

  • Individual Education Plan (IEP)
  • Educational Assistant (EA) support
  • Speech and language services
  • Behaviour support services

5. Join a Support Group

Connect with other waiting families:

  • Ontario Autism Coalition
  • Facebook groups for local regions
  • Hospital and clinic parent groups

How to Check Your Waitlist Position

Unfortunately, Ontario does not provide a public portal to check your exact position. You can:

  1. Call AccessOAP: 1-833-425-2445
  2. Request a status update in writing
  3. Ask for estimated wait time for your region

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I speed up my place on the waitlist?

No. The OAP waitlist is first-come, first-served. There is no way to "skip the line."

What if we move to a different region?

Your registration date is preserved when you move within Ontario. You keep your spot.

Does a more severe diagnosis get priority?

Ontario eliminated needs-based prioritization in 2019. All children wait in the same queue.

What happens when we reach the top?

You'll be contacted by the OAP to:

  1. Confirm your information
  2. Complete a needs determination
  3. Choose an approved service provider
  4. Begin receiving funded services

The Human Cost

Behind these numbers are real families:

"We registered when our son was 2. He's now 7 and still waiting. The critical intervention window has closed." — Ontario parent

"We spent our savings on private therapy. Many families can't afford that choice." — Parent advocate

What Can Change This?

Policy Changes Needed

  1. Increase funding to match waitlist growth
  2. Expand provider network with incentives
  3. Streamline registration process
  4. Transparent waitlist reporting
  5. Needs-based prioritization for critical cases
