How long does autism diagnosis take in Ontario?

Before joining the OAP waitlist, Ontario diagnostic waitlists average **12–24 months** at public hospitals. [OAP] This pre-waitlist delay means total time from first concern to therapy often exceeds **5–7 years**, an invisible bottleneck in official statistics.

Can autistic students get an educational assistant (EA)?

Schools may assign EAs based on IEP needs, but **47% of families** report insufficient supports. [OAC] EA availability varies by board and often fails to match clinical needs, leaving many autistic students without necessary classroom support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Call Access OAP at 1-833-425-2445 to register. You'll need: your child's autism diagnosis document, your child's health card, proof of Ontario residency, and your ID as parent/guardian. Registration takes about 30 minutes over the phone. Your registration date determines your position on the waitlist, so register immediately after diagnosis.
The DON is an assessment by an OAP-approved independent clinical expert (psychologist or behavior analyst) who evaluates your child's strengths, needs, and goals. They will interview you, review records, observe your child, and complete standardized assessments. The DON determines your child's needs level (1-4) and corresponding funding allocation.
From diagnosis to services: (1) Diagnosis: 2-24 months depending on public/private, (2) Registration: Same day, (3) Intake: 1-3 months, (4) Wait for invitation: 5+ years, (5) DON: 1-2 months, (6) Provider selection: 1-2 months. Total: 5-7+ years from initial concern to receiving core clinical services.
Access OAP is Ontario's centralized intake for autism services. They handle registration, intake, and provide information about OAP. Contact: 1-833-425-2445 or accessoap@ontario.ca. They are open Monday-Friday 8:30am-5pm ET. Access OAP determines eligibility but does not make clinical decisions or conduct assessments.
No, you need a formal autism diagnosis before registering with OAP. However, you can start the diagnostic process while learning about OAP. Once you have the diagnosis in hand, call Access OAP immediately to register - every day matters for your waitlist position.
Required documents: (1) Autism diagnosis report with professional's registration number, (2) Child's birth certificate or proof of age, (3) Child's Ontario Health Card, (4) Proof of Ontario residency (utility bill, lease), (5) Parent/guardian ID. Have multiple copies of all documents.
After registration: (1) You'll complete an intake assessment (phone interview, 1-3 months), (2) You wait for core clinical services invitation based on registration date (current wait 5+ years), (3) Once invited, you'll complete the DON process, (4) Then you select a provider and begin services. Note: No bridge or interim funding is available for families who registered after April 2021.
Interim One-Time Funding (up to $20,000) was only provided to families who registered for the OAP before April 1, 2021. If you registered after this date, you are NOT eligible for interim funding. OAP funding is NOT retroactive and will not cover expenses incurred before your official funding invitation.
Yes, but the provider must be on the OAP approved list. You cannot use OAP funding for unapproved providers. Research providers carefully as some have additional waitlists or restrictions. Once you select a provider, OAP pays them directly based on your child's funding allocation.
If you disagree with the funding decision, you can request a review within 90 days of the decision. You'll need to provide new information or evidence supporting why the decision should be changed. Contact Access OAP for the review request form and process.
Prepare for DON by: (1) Gathering recent assessments (school, psychological, speech), (2) Documenting your child's current challenges and strengths, (3) Listing your goals for your child, (4) Creating a list of questions for the assessor, (5) Having all relevant records organized and available.
If moving to Ontario from another province with an existing autism diagnosis: (1) Establish Ontario residency, (2) Get Ontario health card for your child, (3) Call Access OAP to register with your existing diagnosis, (4) Your waitlist position starts from Ontario registration date, not original diagnosis date.
The OAP waitlist is first-come, first-served based on registration date. Children with higher needs do not move ahead in line. The only exception is if your family is in immediate crisis, which may trigger urgent services review. Otherwise, all children wait in registration date order.
