Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Get an autism diagnosis

    Your child must have a diagnosis from a psychologist, developmental pediatrician, or psychiatrist. The diagnosis must use DSM-5 criteria.

  2. Gather required documents

    You will need your child's Ontario health card, the written diagnosis report, and proof of Ontario residency for you and your child.

  3. Register online or by phone

    Start at AccessOAP.ca or call AccessOAP at 1-833-425-2445 (Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm ET).

  4. Receive your confirmation

    After submitting, you will receive a reference number by mail within a few weeks. Keep this number - you will need it for future inquiries.

  5. Wait for your invitation

    As of May 2026, 71,263 registered children did not have an active core funding agreement (MCCSS FOI via OAC · May 2026). Foundational family services are available in the interim while you wait.

Meanwhile…While a family on the highway has completed diagnosis and entered the OAP funding queue, a family on the river is still waiting for their first phone call. This head start allows private-path families to access critical early intervention up to 2 years earlier.

Frequently Asked Questions

The community-reported wait is 5+ years for families registered in August 2021 (community-reported, Ontario Autism Coalition, July 2026). Ontario does not publish individual wait predictions. Ask AccessOAP about current pathways and available supports while you wait.

Contact AccessOAP at 1-833-425-2445 (Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm ET) with your child's health card number. Staff can look up your registration and reissue your reference number.
