You have the right to request an IEP team meeting at any time. Here is how to do it effectively.
Email is sufficient and preferred because it creates a record. Address it to the principal and copy the classroom teacher. Keep a copy for your own records.
Write: "I am requesting an IEP team meeting to discuss [specific concern]." Be concrete - for example, "accommodations for sensory regulation" or "revised transition goals."
Schools should schedule the meeting within 30 days of your request. State this expectation in your email: "I would appreciate a meeting date within 30 days."
Bring previous IEP versions, clinician reports (OT, SLP, psychologist), progress notes, and your own observations. You are a member of the IEP team - your input is required.
Send a recap email within 48 hours summarizing what was decided, who is responsible, and the timeline. This protects you and the school.
Under Ontario's Education Act, schools must hold IEP reviews at least annually and upon parent request. If a school refuses or delays unreasonably, escalate to the superintendent in writing.
Yes. You may bring an advocate, support person, or clinician. Inform the school in advance so they can plan for the additional attendee. The school cannot prevent you from bringing support.

Who is eligible for OAP funding?
VerifiedOAP eligibility requires the child to: (1) be under 18 years of age, (2) strictly reside in Ontario, and (3) have a written diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) from a qualified professional. Where can I get an autism diagnosis in Ontario?
VerifiedDiagnoses are provided by psychologists, developmental pediatricians, or qualified medical specialists. Public hospital assessments are free (OHIP) but have 1-2 year waits. Private assessments cost $2,500-$4,000 and are faster (2-4 months). Both are accepted by OAP if they meet DSM-5 standards.
